about

Based on the research of Nicole Haitzinger and Johanna Hörmann into the 'dream dancer' Madeleine G. and her performances in a magnetised state, Lea Karnutsch created the re-enactment video work "Transfusing Frequencies: Reenacting Magdeleine". The dance material is based on descriptions by Émile Magnin, the magnetizer, of the magnetization technique (similar to hypnosis), and on original photographs of Magdeleine Guipet's choreography, "La Marche funèbre de Chopin". Set in a contemporary context, the re-enactment explores one of the central characteristics of Madeleine G.'s performances: the intersection between reality and illusion. Despite the phantasmagoric atmosphere, the figure of the dream dancer retains her agency, thereby challenging the mystical setting.
The project was discussed by Nicole Haitzinger and Johanna Hörmann in their co-presentation: ‘Hypnogirl 23’. Die holographische Erscheinung der Traumtänzerin Magdeleine G. zwischen Hypnose, Technik und Imagination’.
